Aussies strike late blows

Australia has seized control of the fourth Commonwealth Bank Ashes Test in front of a record breaking crowd at the MCG on Boxing Day.

Having been sent in with overcast conditions, England crawled to 4-201 before the second new ball decimated the visitors late in the day as they slumped to 6-226 at stumps with Kevin Pietersen unbeaten on 67.

Australia’s pace battery of Ryan Harris (2-32), Mitch Johnson (2-59), Peter Siddle (1-48) and Shane Watson (1-11) maintained their stranglehold on the arch-enemy with another suffocating performance to hand the ascendancy to the hosts.

A world record crowd of 91,092 attended the opening day of the Boxing Day Test.
