Celebrating 125 years

The Box Hill Reporter District Cricket Association (BHRDCA) celebrated its 125th anniversary at its season launch at East Burwood Cricket Club last night.

In partnership with Cricket Victoria, the BHRDCA held its inaugural MILO T20Blast ‘come and try’, a Twenty20 match and a President’s function to honour the milestone.

Around 150 people gathered at East Burwood to see the Ray McIntosh Shield team take on the Wilson Shield team, featuring players from top two grades of the BHRDCA.

“This is an exciting season for the BHRDCA,” BHRDCA l Marketing, Sponsorship and Grants Manager Emma Boschetti said.

“The 125th season launch saw players from opposing clubs become teammates, showcasing what the BHRDCA and cricket as a whole is all about, which is fantastic.”

Celebrating diversity, the teams included the best multicultural talent within the league with multicultural food and music also on offer.

“The BHRDCA is committed to engaging with our multicultural community and it was great to see many members from it at the event,” Boschetti said.

Former Australian Test player and current Victorian selector Ray Bright took the reins of the Wilson Shield team, who claimed a four-wicket win over Ray McIntosh Shield that was headed by the Commonwealth Bank VicSpirit’s Kelly Applebee.

Sean Bramstedt top scored for the Ray McIntosh Shield with an unbeaten 60 while Trav Balaam (52) scored a half-century for Wilson Shield.

Earlier, 30 children in the area enjoyed a MILO T20 Blast ‘come and try’ session where they got a taste of the fun and exciting game.

The event saw Melbourne Stars Chief Executive Officer Clint Cooper in attendance along with Mr Neil Angus, MP and club Presidents within the BHRDCA.

Melbourne Stars mascot Starman also featured throughout the launch along with the Cricket World Cup countdown clock and Cricket4kids who were collecting equipment.

“It was a great event that was thoroughly enjoyed by all,” Boschetti said.

“Thanks to all involved including East Burwood, Whitehorse City Council, Cricket Victoria, Melbourne Stars Cricket World Cup, Cricket4kids and all of our clubs.”
