The record books were re-written when the Commonwealth Bank VicSpirit demolished the SA Scorpions in their WNCL match at Camberwell in November.

The side posted 3-418 from 50 overs, passing the previous record of 5-395, which New South Wales amassed against Tasmania in 2010.

The innings was built around Elyse Villani’s stunning knock of 173 from 129 deliveries, which included 22 boundaries and six sixes.

Surprising given the record total, but it was a sedate start to the VicSpirit innings with superstar Meg Lanning, who had two weeks prior smashed a WNCL record 175 (143), struggled with her timing and was dismissed for 52 (80).

The fall of Lanning’s wicket brought Jess Cameron to the crease, who immediately went on the attack.

Cameron’s intent was mirrored by Villani, who upped the scoring run rate with the pair regularly hitting over 12 runs an over in the middle of the innings.

Villani’s maiden VicSpirit century came off 89 deliveries, while Cameron reached her first WNCL triple figure score from only 56 balls, the fastest hundred in the tournament’s history.

Villani fell in the 44th over when she had Lanning’s record score in her sights.

Cameron was caught and bowled on the last over of the innings on 128 from 68 deliveries which included 18 fours and four which cleared the ropes.

VicSpirit skippers Emma Inglis (33*) and Kelly Applebee (10*) put the icing on the cake at the end of the innings to push past the 400 total.

VicSpirit assistant coach Kent Hannam said after that the match that he has never seen a batting performance like it.

”I don’t know how to describe it… amazing…unbelievable hitting and placement was terrific,” Hannam said.

”The South Australian attack appeared to be a touch helpless.

“They were trying their hardest, bowling a good line and it just was a freak innings times two that conspired against them.’

Hannam was proud of the achievements by the players.

”It’s the first time anyone has scored 400 against SA, which is a proud cricket state,” Hannam said.

“Having Meg at 175, Karen [Rolton for SA] at 173 not out, Elyse at 173, is just fantastic for us,”

”With all the great players who have come before, our terrific players at the minute, to have two of them in the top three of all time and have the top team score is really pleasing.”
