The Allan Border Medal night in February saw two Victorians honoured with Clint McKay picking up one-day international Player of the Year and Jess Cameron the Belinda Clark Medal.

Commonwealth Bank Bushrangers paceman McKay polled 30 votes to edge out New South Wales’ David Warner and Tasmania’s George Bailey on 28 votes, while Victorian teammate David Hussey was a vote further back on 27, becoming just the fourth bowler behind Shane Warne, Glenn McGrath and Nathan Bracken to win the award.

During the voting period, McKay was Australia’s leading ODI wicket taker with 26 scalps at 25.76 including figures of 5-28 against Sri Lanka in the deciding third final of the Commonwealth Bank Series last summer.

McKay was also Australia’s standout bowler during its disappointing series in England over winter, with his teammates’ support edging him across the line.

“It’s something I didn’t really expect,” McKay admitted.

“It’s a great thrill. To win an award that’s voted by your peers is something you treasure very strongly.”

Since making his ODI debut in 2009, McKay has claimed 74 wickets in 42 matches at 22.22 and an economy rate of 4.66.

His stunning form places him alongside bowling greats such as Dennis Lillee and Waqar Younis at similar junctions of their careers.

VicSpirit superstar Cameron, who became the first Victorian to win the Award since VicSpirit coach Cathryn Fitzpatrick prevailed in 2004, narrowly defeated teammate Meg Lanning by five votes.

The highlight of Cameron’s season came in the World Twenty20 final against England in October when she was named Player of the Final after she top-scored with 45 (34).

“It’s an absolute honour to win the Belinda Clark Award, with greats like Cathryn Fitzpatrick, Shelley Nitschke, Karen Rolton and Lisa Stahalekar winning beforehand,” Cameron said.

“It’s been a big 12 months for the Commonwealth Bank Southern Stars winning the Twenty20 World Cup and now being in India trying to get the 50 over trophy.

Cameron played 15 matches during the voting period and hit 525 runs, at an average of 52.5, while Lanning amassed 768 runs at an average of 51.20.

The powerful right hander smashed 414 runs for VicSpirit this season, including a record-breaking 128 against the SA Scorpions in which she reached her century from just 56 deliveries.
