Under-19 Country and Metro male squads announced

80 young cricketers have been selected in the Victorian Under-19 Country and Metro trial squads for the 2016-17 season.

In a revamp to the Country versus Metro tournament this September in Barooga, there will be two squads representing each region, replacing the Academy Combined Under 19s and Academy Invitational Under-20s sides that took part in 2015.

High Performance Academy Coach Jarrad Loughman explained the changes to the program.
“The Under-20s side worked well last year and they provided a good test for the Under-19 boys, but this year we have the chance to give playing opportunities to 48 Under-19 aged players,” Loughman said.

“Barooga offers a level playing field for all players in terms of competition for spots, with great conditions that allow for some quality cricket early in the season.

“It’s the fifth year of the Barooga series and it has grown every year – we’ve extended the program in 2016 to include the Under-17 Country and Metro squads that will play practice matches ahead of the National Championships the following week.”

Commonwealth Bank Bushrangers rookies Sam Grimwade, Xavier Crone and Blake Thomson have all been selected amongst the state’s finest male under-19 players.

Under-19 Trial Squad members will also complete skills, fitness, nutrition and performance management components during sessions leading up to the Barooga Series.

The Barooga series will provide opportunity for players to showcase their skills and press for selection in the Under-19 National Championships Country and Metro squads, which will be selected at the beginning of November ahead of the tournament beginning in Adelaide on December 5.

In addition, club cricket performances in October will also be followed closely for Barooga squad players and for those not selected for the Country versus Metro tournament.
