EMP secure 2010-11 Premiership

The win locked in EMP’s second finals title for the season having taken out the Twenty20 title in the week before.

After going down to Brunswick Park in the previous two finals, the Bombers were hungry to see the Agnes McDonnel Trophy return to EMP.

Sent into bat, Box Hill internationals Rachael Haynes and Meg Lanning got off to a great start, putting on a quick 42 run partnership and looking to be in damaging form.

Lanning smashed six early boundaries, but the employment of leg-spinner Kristen Beams brought on immediate results.

Stumped and stranded for 31 off just 26 balls, Lanning’s reign ended when she attempted to come down the wicket to Beams’ second delivery.

Haynes departed in the following over, caught by Nicola Hancock off Emma Kearney’s first over and, when Kate Dempsey departed the same way as Lanning in the next, the Mustangs were struggling at 3/50.

From there, the Box Hill innings lost its momentum and, despite some resistance from Casey Hawley (16) and Rebecca Carter (22no), Box Hill were bowled out for 118.

Kristen Beams (2/11), Clea Smith (3/29) and Cassie Brock (3/24) were EMP’s best bowlers, whilst wicket-keeper Candace Hulett snared four stumpings.

In reply, Brock (21) and Molly Strano (15) got EMP away to a bright start, putting on 43 for the first wicket before Penelope Cleghorn got the breakthrough, dismissing Brock thanks to a great catch by Haynes at short cover.

Wickets to Lanning and Shaw saw EMP slump to 3/67, but any dreams of a miraculous comeback were thwarted when Emily McIntyre (21no) and Briana Binch (24no) came to the crease.

The two inched the Bombers closer to victory and in the 29th over McIntyre swept for four to secure the Premiership for her club.

Cassie Brock, for her 21 runs and 3/24 was adjudged the winner of the Betty Wilson Medal for player of the final.

In the Premier Seconds competition, Brown Hill took out the title with a convincing win over Coburg at Camberwell on Saturday.

Coburg got away to an excellent start, with an opening stand of 51 between openers Lyndal McMaster (20) and Rebecca Allen (26).

Brown Hill’s Karen Casey (4/14) soon put the brakes on with a decisive spell.

Some late resistance from tail-ender Vicky Maulden (23no), saw Coburg post a final total of 9/137 from their 45 overs. Rebecca Kuiper was the other pick of the Brown Hill bowlers, taking 2/11

Despite the early loss of Sasha Peers (8), Ella Austin (48) and Briony Polkinghorne (54no) added 84 for the second wicket and, thereafter, the result was never in doubt, with skipper Debbie Jones (15no) seeing her side home.

Brown Hill reached 2/140 to win with almost three overs to spare with Polkinghorne named the player of the match.
