Free cricket coaching courses this summer

More than 3,000 people across the country are expected to undertake the free courses during the 2017-18 season.

The initiative will develop coaching skills around Australia, with an emphasis on junior cricket, by making the courses more accessible to parents, volunteers and all budding cricket coaches.

This will be a first for cricket – as the Community coaching course usually costs $120 per person.

CBA Victorian Bushrangers Head Coach Andrew McDonald said there was a range of positive experiences for individuals in coaching.

“Coaching is a very rewarding way to be involved in the game. It’s really satisfying – at whatever level you coach at or are thinking of becoming involved – to see teams and individuals develop their abilities and hopefully enjoy some success along the way,” McDonald said.

VicSpirit Head Coach David Hemp said the free course would help many people take the next step.

“I’m sure there are lots of budding Victorian coaches out there in the ranks who have given some thought to doing the course and getting involved. Now that Cricket Australia has made it free for the upcoming summer, it’s a good time to start that coaching pathway. Who knows where it might take you or what you could learn,” Hemp said.

All courses are run by accredited local staff trained by Cricket Australia. The course is accredited by the Australian Sports Commission and endorsed by the International Cricket Council.

The Community coaching course also provides coaches with access to online resources, and will include training on the revised Junior Formats which are currently being introduced around Australia.

People can register for the free course by signing up online at the Cricket Australia Coaching website, completing an online Introduction to Cricket course and selecting a course in their region.
