Women’s
The Kings and Falcons are the Women’s NICL|1 Zone Champions in Victoria after Grand-Final victories at Croydon Indoor Sports on Sunday evening.
The East Grand-Final saw the Falcons up against Springvale Seahawks, who put together a more than competitive total of 118 batting first. Sonia Sachdev made 22 for the Seahawks, while Yo Miller was the best of the Falcons bowlers taking 2/13 in her two overs. However, in response the Falcons showed their batting depth passing the Seahawks’ total in the 13th over. They were led by a third pair partnership of 50 between Alanah Mison (26 runs) and Yo Miller (24 runs). Nat Taylor was awarded the Player of the Final, scoring 22 runs and taking 1/12 off 2 overs.
In the Live-Streamed West Grand-Final the Kings did battle with the Springvale Scorpions. Batting first the Kings put together an evening batting performance with contributions from each of their pairs in a total of 114. Danielle Montague and Nicole Martin led the way with 18 runs apiece.
In reply the Scorpions started strongly posting 40 with their first pair of Deb Loughan and Elly Donald. But three wickets in the middle overs to Allison Baker started a resurgence for the Kings which left Springvale with 39 to win in the final four overs. Adelaide Campion and Laura Shaw scored 47 in their Preliminary Final win over Melton, but fell just short on this occasion to go down by 9 runs. Alison Baker was awarded Player of the Final, scoring 13 runs and taking 3 wickets.
Men’s
Northcote Knights and Melton Falcons have cemented themselves at the top of the Victoria West ladder following convincing wins in their final round NICL matches.
The Knights were too strong for North Geelong Supercats 150-94, which included a final pair partnership of 57 between David Worthington (26) and Cam Clayton (31). Geoff Latham also contributed well with 19 runs and 3 wickets in the win.
Melton Falcons also took the points in their 37-run victory over Hoppers Crossing.
Brad Jones led the scoring for the Falcons with 25 runs, while Cam Moran and Steve Robertson took 2 wickets apiece. Both teams will meet again next week in a Preliminary Final showdown, with Northcote Knights already straight through to the Zone Grand-Final.
In the East Zone, Croydon Raiders have capped off an undefeated season with a 22-run victory over Frankston Sharks. Justin Perkins returned to the Raiders lineup and impressed with 16 runs and 2 wickets. Aaron McKenzie, Kieran Perkins and Michael Sullivan were also multiple wicket-takers in the win. The two teams will do battle again next week in the East Zone Grand Final.
Cranbourne Kings also finished their season on a high after a comfortable 97-49 run win over Monash Tigers in the Live-Streamed Match of the Round. Batting first the Tigers were unable to build any momentum in their innings with a constant flow of wickets led by Kings’ skipper, Mitch Gregory (4/-11). In response, an opening pair stand of 31 between David Dervan and Aaron Straughair set the platform in the run chase.
