Cricket Victoria congratulate Meg Lanning AM on her retirement from international cricket

One of Australia’s greatest-ever cricketers, Lanning begun her career at Victoria at just 16 years of age.

The 31-year-old went on to make her ODI debut in 2011 against England, and in only her second game, she slammed an unbeaten 103 at just 18 years old – becoming the youngest Australian to score an international ton.

In 2014, Lanning was appointed as captain of her country, becoming Australia’s youngest ever skipper at just 21 years of age.

She would go on to win seven World Cups, captaining her side in four of them, as well as being part of the Gold Medal winning team at the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham.

An ODI average of 53.51 with 15 tons – the most ever in women’s cricket – and an T20I average of 36.61 with a top score of 133 not out, Lanning can lay claim to being one of Australia’s greatest ever batters.

Cricket Victoria Chief Executive Officer Nick Cummins said:

“Meg has made an extraordinary contribution to our game at the international level. She is one of the best players Australia has ever produced with a career resume of global proportions. Not only has she led Australia with distinction as an ambassador for the game, she has inspired a generation of children and adults alike to be involved,” Cummins said.

“Meg has led the most successful women’s sporting team around the world. Her preparation, commitment and leadership are second to none. We look forward to Meg continuing to be involved in our programs at Cricket Victoria and the Melbourne Stars into the future.

Cricket Victoria Chair Ross Hepburn said:

“We are immensely proud of Meg and her contribution to our national team. Meg has performed her role on and off the field with professionalism and a determination to succeed. We look forward to joining Cricket Australia in formally recognising Meg’s achievements in due course.”
