Cricket Victoria loses a legend

Loxton, 90, passed away in Queensland overnight.

Loxton was an outstanding all-rounder for Prahran, Victoria and Australia who became a prominent administrator and a member of Victoria’s State Parliament for many years.

Cricket Victoria Chairman Geoff Tamblyn said that Loxton will be sorely missed.

“He was a legend around Victorian cricket for many years,” Tamblyn said.

“He has been living in Queensland for a few years and always made an effort to speak to the young Victorian players when they were up there playing.

“He was a tremendous person.”

Originally from Wesley College, Loxton started at Prahran in 1933 and scored an unbeaten 232 on debut for Victoria against Queensland in 1946-47.

Loxton served on the VCA Pennant Committee from 1962-63 to 1979-80 and was a State Selector from 1957 until 1980-81.

Loxton’s finest moment for Prahran came in 1954-55, when he virtually won the premiership single-handed for his side, making 129 and taking 7-115 against Hawthorn-East Melbourne.

One of the 1948 Invincibles, Loxton played 66 matches for Victoria from 1946 to 1958 and hit 3157 runs at an average of 36.28.

He also collected 130 wickets at an average of 23.90.
