Victoria announces men’s squad for opening One-Day Cup game

The dawning of a new domestic One-Day cricket season is finally upon us with the Victorian men’s team today unveiling its 13-player squad for its opening One-Day Cup game against Tasmania.

Victoria has named a squad featuring a blend of youth and experience, with the emerging Campbell Kellaway, Sam Elliot and Mitch Perry, complimenting the likes of Peter Siddle, Sam Harper and Marcus Harris.

Explosive scorer, Josh Brown, has been named to make his Victorian debut, while Peter Handscomb returns after a prolific county season where the thirty-three-year-old scored an outstanding 894 runs at 74.50 for Leicestershire.

Will Sutherland will lead Victoria for a second consecutive season.

Victoria enters the new campaign carrying strong momentum following back-to-back wins against NSW in Sydney last week.

Todd Murphy looks set for an impressive summer after the talented off-spinner captured 5/76 from a combined 20 overs across the two games.

Murphy was among several standout players alongside Sam Harper (117) and Tom Rogers (94*), while reigning Bill Lawry and Dean Jones medallist Fergus O’Neil, continued his hot streak, claiming 3/29 from 10 overs.

In what promises to be an enthralling first week of men’s domestic cricket, Victoria welcomes the Tigers on Monday morning before a blockbuster home clash against Queensland on the Friday public holiday.

Cricket Victoria’s Head of Male Cricket, David Hussey, said the squad was raring to go for the new season ahead.

“After an effective off-season where we targeted our strategy, identity and cohesion as a squad, the playing group is excited to launch into a new season,” said Hussey.

“We’re focused on building on the growth we made last year, and we have a great opportunity to start our season strongly with two home matches against Tasmania and Queensland next week.”
