Mentone Grammar claimed the 2017 Premier Schools Shield on Friday, defeating Salesian College by five wickets on a sunny afternoon at Schramms Reserve in Doncaster.
Salesian batted first in the T20 boys competition final, making 7/112 from their 20 overs before Mentone comfortably chased down the total in the 17th over. Mentone captain Sam Hutcheon top scored with a formidable 53 to steer his school to victory.
The competition began on Tuesday last week with seven schools (Mentone Grammar, Salesian College, De La Salle College, John Paul College, Aquinas College, Thomas Carr College and Ballarat College) from the School Sports Associations playing matches over two days.
Mentone knocked off Ballarat in the semi-final on Wednesday afternoon – scoring 9/142 to Ballarat’s 6/112 – while Salesian kept Aquinas to 9/91 from their 20 overs to secure a 35 run win and a spot in the final.
Congratulations to Mentone Grammar on winning the Premier Schools Shield and to all teams that competed in the competition.
