After dismissing NSW for 257, Victoria completed the day on the back foot, losing 5-46 by stumps.
Having won the toss and electing to bat, NSW steadily compiled its innings, reaching 3-91 at lunch with captain Jake Doran leading the charge.
As play resumed, Wes Agar made the breakthrough, claiming the prize wicket of Doran for 62.
While Victoria claimed quick wickets, James Psarakis (56) and Jonathan Rose (39) continued to keep the scoreboard ticking.
Sam Grimwade (3-58) combined with Josh Hudson (3-33) to lead the Victorian attack, claiming late wickets to restrict NSW to 257.
“We bowled pretty well and had a few big appeals that didn’t go our way,” Victorian coach Graeme Rummans said.
“I thought we did well to fight back and take the last few wickets for under 50 runs.
“Sam bowled really well again, creating a lot of pressure and Hudson took a couple of quick wickets and was on a hat-trick at one stage.”
Jackson Mockett (2-41), Adam McMaster (1-32) and Wes Agar (1-47) also contributed significantly to the attack, picking the top-order apart.
In reply, Victoria was immediately put on the back foot, losing 5-46 after 19 overs.
With Blake Thomson (11*) and McMaster (5*) at the crease, Victoria will look to steady the ship when play resumes today.
“It’s always a tough period to bat in but it was disappointing to lose five wickets at the end,” Rummans said.
“Hopefully Thomson and McMaster can get a bit of a partnership going now.”
